Review of Eyes Wide Shut (1999) by Svyatoslav P — 11 Jun 2011
I have no idea why this movie gets such bad reviews. Ok - it's slow, but you probably knew this before you even watched it. What makes it interesting are the layers, upon layers, of depth that the screenplay has and the touches that that Kubrick puts in to really make the story dramatic and captivating. If you pay attention with any sort of detail, you'll begin to see what Kubrick wanted you to see.
What's particularly stunning about this film is the lack of any meaning or message being shoved down your throat. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of meaning in the story, but you are going to be one that has to find it.
In the end, I think the reason why the average person finds it boring is that there's not a captivating dialog that tells you how to think and feel, and people are uncomfortable at finding drawing their own conclusions from something themselves.
