Review of Eyes Wide Shut (1999) by Garrett ! — 21 Oct 2011
The true orgy here is not the dispassionate cult affair that the film is so famous for. Rather, it is the orgy of a film-maker who is truly in love with his craft to a degree that so few of us can truly fathom.
Seeing Eyes Wide Shut feels almost like being underwater: everything is dreamy, slow, somehow hyper-real. The colors are dazzling. Everything seems saturated to the point of fantasy. The girls are idols, practically flawless in appearance, be they wife, teenager, prostitute.
It doesn't matter. Kubrick applies the gloss of film to everything. And, coincidentally, he happens to make a sort of sexual odyssey while he's at it.
