Review of Eyes Wide Shut (1999) by Ken S — 08 May 2012
The final film by the legendary Stanley Kubrick is pretty odd. It is a story about Marriage and sex, and the effects of both on the other. I can see how it was misunderstood by so many, how it possibly disappointed some Kubrick faithful, and yet I can see the good in it.
I don't think it is great or anything. It is a provocative and erotic film, with lots of sex and odd happening. I wasn't thrilled by the movie, and I don't think it had me terribly captivated, but I think it was interesting none the less.
Cruise and Kidman do okay, but I wonder if two better actors might have really sold the picture. That is just conjecture though. Kubrick finished the film, and passed away just before it came out, leaving it his final statement to the world.
It is a fascinating statement at any rate.
