Review of Eyes Wide Shut (1999) by Evan J — 02 Sep 2013
Eyes Wide Shut was a fantastic film! I really don't understand why there is a good amount of negativity thrown at this movie. Do people just not understand it? The movie isn't about Tom Cruise trying to get laid. IT'S A TEST OF MORALITY! It is long, but the 2 and a half hour run time flew by. And that's because of how engaged I was while watching. Never was I bored or uninterested during my viewing. Like all other Kubrick films, the score is absolutely amazing. Eyes Wide Shut is polarizing, haunting, and very unique. So many layers in this movie, and that's why I loved it! The plot alone in great. A brilliant psychological drama.
EWS is my new favorite Tom Cruise movie. I thought he did a fantastic job in his role. The same goes for Nicole Kidman. They were casted perfectly in my eyes. The two were able to portray a legitimate married couple and their emotions felt real and genuine.
Once again Kubrick has delivered another spectacular movie. His writing and direction are like no other filmmakers. I have not seen all of Kubrick's movies yet. But for now EWS ranks #2 behind A Clockwork Orange. A perfect ending to the brilliant Stanley Kubrick.
