Review of Eye of the Needle (1981) by Ryan K — 20 Mar 2008
Storm Island, Off the coast of Scotland: It is 1944 and the Second World War is turning in the Allies favor as they prepare for the Invasion of Normandy. D-Day is jeapordised when a German spy, known as The Needle makes a crucial discovery.
Persued by British Intelligeance he is shipwrecked and washes up on Storm Island, and into the life of Lucy, a woman unhappy with the hand fate dealt her and married to a crippled husband who spends most of his time drunk.
An doomed love affair erupts between Lucy and the Needle, and the war once distant becomes an intensly personal affair, as the Needle puts it "The War has come down to the two of us.". Great spy thriller, with some great acting by Donald Sutherland as The Needle an enigma to all he meets, Kate Nelligan as Lucy lonely, hurt and afraid, and Christopher Cazenove as her husband a bitter man angry at the world who would rather drink then touch her.
Well done, check this out if you get the chance.
