Review of Eye in the Sky (2015) by Anthony B — 21 May 2016
In Eye in the Sky, warfare as video game, Helen Mirren plays a British army colonel tasked with killing or capturing top El Shabab terrorists, including a radicalized Englishwoman. The film shows its adversaries engaging in the surreal 21st century business of drone warfare-breakfasting then commuting to work in countries thousands of miles from their intended targets.
On the dusty streets of Narobi, gun-toting El Shabab fighters are a dangerous, surly presence, while their adversaries, senior officers and government officials, safe in the comfort of offices and control rooms continents away, argue the merits of having to kill innocent civilians in order to thwart an imminent suicide mission they are watching unfold with their Sci-fi technology.
Oscar-winning director Gavin Hood gradually ramps up the tension, creating a credible, thought-provoking denouement. Sadly, Alan Rickman's role as a British general proved to be his last.
