If you really think about it this movie didn't need it's long duration time it quite possibly could have been compressed into 30 minutes or less, it's as easy as point and shoot. If they could have been little more keen and intelligent they would have thought of a solution.
Chances are, even with the collateral damage in real life they wouldn't hesitate to pull the trigger.
