Review of Eye in the Sky (2015) by Amanda C — 09 Aug 2016
Eye in the Sky is a taught thriller that gives no easy answers. Moving between the Western military controlling the missiles and Kenya where their terrorist target is hiding, the film examines the implications that come with removing the soldiers from the field of battle and placing them at a safe distance (in this case an entire ocean) from the action.
Helen Mirren is spectacular as the Colonel hell bent on terminating her target, using her commanding presence to its best advantage. The rest of the cast are equally good, in particular Aaron Paul as the man charged with pulling the trigger and the three actors playing the Kenyan family that inadvertently complicates the mission.
Unlike most films about wars overseas that are very much a current reality for many, Eye in the Sky is not just a glorified plug for the Western military. The filmmakers are serious questioning their presences effect on the civilians who are caught in the cross fire.
It makes a powerful statement without ever quite settling on a side.
