Review of Eye for an Eye (1996) by David L — 08 Nov 2015
Bog standard movie which discusses the moral dilemma of revenge and justice. Led by a well known trio of actors, this film looks at life after death when a 17 year old girl is brutally raped and murdered.
Burdened with the knowledge that her killer is still on the loose, the mother (and step father) must learn to live with the wrath that they have for him. However all that gets too much when he continually appears in their everyday lives, threatening to strike again.
What will they do - take brutal revenge on their daughter and place the death sentence on him that the courts so easily dismissed, or continue to live their own lives for the sake of their other 6 year old daughter? Not that I can imagine going through this, but the rage which must come about from such a situation would surely lead one to question our own morality, opting to choose whether life imprisonment is really worth it.
I'm not sure how believable it is that having gotten away with the original accusations, why a convicted rapist and murderer would continue to prowl the same town for his victims, but there you go.
I'm also not sure that the message of 'self defence' that is contrived here is a particularly positive one, suggesting that murder is ok if you can pretend it's acting to save oneself.
Nevertheless, this was a decent enough storyline to follow with some evidently powerful topics of conversation that can be opened up to debate. Feel free to discuss ......
