Review of Eye for an Eye (1996) by Christopher L — 18 Jul 2004
Starring: Sally Field, Kiefer Sutherland, Ed Harris, Beverly D'Angelo, Joe Mantegna, Philip Baker Hall, and Keith David.
Directed by John Schlesinger.
Written by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa.
Rated R (for language and disturbing violence which includes rape).
Running time approximately 1 hour 42 minutes.
Eye for an Eye is a low-rent, woman-empowering version of the goofy-but-fun Charles Bronson vehicle Death Wish. It's a revenge flick unworthy of the good revenge flicks from which it steals all of its contents. Kiefer Sutherland and Sally Field, on the other hand, do deliver good performances, even if they are in a trite piece of woman-in-trouble filmmaking. I prefer Enough to this, and that was a bad, bad film. How John Schlesinger went from directing the masterpiece that was Midnight Cowboy (1969) to this and The Next Best Thing (2000), I do not know. Still, if you like creeps and rape and murder, along with a bit of disturbing pedophilia, go ahead and see it. Indulge away. I know I won't. *1/2 (out of ****) C-.
