Review of Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011) by Luke S — 05 Mar 2013
An interesting film that begins slow. The son Oskar finds a key a year after his father's death on September 11. He believes the key is part of a hunting expedition game that will lead to a discovery his father wanted him to find out.
What takes away from the film's quality is the heavy reliance on the child's narration. Very little is left to be experienced through the actual human interactions the film tries to convey as the child embarks on his journey.
While at the end, there seems to be more than meets the eye, the relationships appeared as one dimensional without depth. In the end, it is a film that has something important to say, but is not communicated in a skilled manner to the audience.
The response of the audience depends on how much you can relate to the reasoning and inner dialogue of the child. I could not fully relate to it.
