Review of Extraordinary Measures (2010) by Jenny L — 20 May 2010
Extraoridinary Measures is the true story of John Crowley, a man who risked a lot in an attempt to find a cure for his kid's disease. It's a story about hope, perseverance and heart.
It is rare for me to encounter a 3 star movie that I would also, without hesitance, recommend fully and enthusiastically. But if there is one it would be this heartwarming tale. The film stars the always reliable Ford, the often unreliable Fraser and the wonderful Keri Russell. While Ford plays his usual character (which is even underutilized here feeling almost like he wasn't able to fully express all the facets of his conflicted person), and Russell certainly could have used more screen time even on her own (because she is just great in her own right), I want to comment specifically on Fraser. I hesitated to see him in this role because he is not known for his great acting skills. To his credit though, despite his performance actually being subpar, you can tell that he is trying really hard to bring something to the role. And you know what, that simple quality works here because in the end this film is about honesty and heart. Fraser feels genuine which, for me, overshadows his shortcomings as an actor. And the direction adequately tries to fit his character in with the rest of the story so as not to make it feel overwhelming or distracting.
Elements like Frasers somewhat endearing presence is what fuels my desire to recommend Extraordinary Measures, even if I didn't feel like I could give it more then 3 stars. True, the chemistry falters and Russell is kept from doing all that she could have done with a better actor. But the film has one goal, which is to touch you with its story. And because I believe it does that, the other things just kind of fall into place. Even the casting of the kids is subtle but yet effective. They won't stand out as the next break out star, but they work with the common goal. Overall I enjoyed this film for what it did have to offer, and I thought it was heartwarming.
