Review of Extract (2009) by Thomas W — 12 Mar 2010
I guess I just have to come to the conclusion that Judge will not be able to duplicate the genius he shared with the world in Office Space. Office Space was a spot on assault at all things at work -- boss, the overweight women eyeing a piece of cake while making another feel that he/she doesn't really need it so she can shovel it into her mouth instead, etc.
The movie is laugh-out-loud at work and the neighboring hotspot where the employees trickle over to eat and get lit into because of their lack of "flair"! Ugh ... what a horrible workplace .
.. but what a wonderful movie it was. Judge's sophomore effort appealled to even few pepole becasue half of the jokes were simply too smart for our current generation to appreciate (Iiocracy is laugh-out-loud funny if you watch it with the correct audience).
As for Extract -- it is the MOST tame Judge film and there are very few off-color remarks. It is pretty straight-laced and that is its downfall. I expected some zany, wacky, insanely impossible situations to arrive at the Extract factory .
.. but nothing out of the ordinary ever does. I don't know why this one didn't work like this others ... maybe he tried to make the central characters more tame and ordinary (and can a man driving a 7-Series BMW be whacky?) If that man is a character played by Jason Bateman -- then by all means give him EVERYTHING to work with -- he is one of the best comedic actors to re-arrive in Hollywood over these past few years.
I think he can do just about anything. He didn't get to go crazy here :(.
