Review of Extract (2009) by Garry T — 23 Apr 2010
Fairly comparable to 'Office Space', 'Extract' focuses on the lack-of-satisfaction which flavour-extract owner Joel Reynolds (Jason Bateman) feels his life sustains. While his business is successful, issues arise at the extract factory, where a worker is, um, injured, and at home, where his wife (Kristen Wiig) and him have not had relations in over a month.
For anyone who is a fan of Mike Judge, they know his down-to-earth style of storytelling and homely American hilarity is typical of what he projects -- even the soundtrack shows this (Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Texas Tornados, ZZ Top, Bruce Robinson & Waylon Jennings). 'Extract' is a lot closer to Juidge's roots as Sun Belt American seem clear here. It's ideal to mention this because it helps with the films character and direction.
It's unfortunate that the film had recevied mixed-to-bad reviews when it was widely released. However, it was worth the watch and, to some doubters, was actually funny -- subtlety funny.
