Review of Extract (2009) by Hunter D — 01 Jun 2010
While Mike Judge's unique sense of humor is present and the themes he likes are in place, EXTRACT isn't his best work, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not worth your time. The plot is creaky at best, but the sharp dialogue and Judge's talent for capturing hilarity in banal every-day exchanges keeps the seams from showing too much.
Jason Bateman's Michael Bluth schtick is perfect for the kinds of stories Mike Judge likes to tell, Ben Affleck looks like hey may have wandered off a Kevin Smith set (which isn't a bad thing), and is it just me, or does Mike Judge have a thing for girls that look like they're cut from the mold of Jennifer Aniston (I'm referring to Kristen Wiig)? Gene Simmons has a particularly funny role as a bloodthirsty money-hungry lawyer, a character that I would imagine is not much of a departure for Simmons to play.
Out of the four features Judge has directed, this might be the weakest (though one could argue that this is better than IDIOCRACY and I wouldn't contest that) but if you like what he's done, you'll find something to enjoy in EXTRACT.
