Review of Extract (2009) by Stuart B — 31 May 2011
While this is obviously no Office Space, it was great to see Mike Judge can still do blue collar irreveverance like no other. At times it's laugh out loud hilarious (especially with scene stealing scenes from David Koecher as the busy body neighbour in full on Lumberg mode), and it's always entertaining even if it could have benefitted from a little trimming.
It does lag at times and it would have benefitted from either editing or by giving some of these great comic actors some more work to do rather than rely on the decent Jason Bateman and the rather lacklustre Mila Kunis (Clifton Collins Jr.
was great in his smallish role, and the women were dreadfully underused - what I'd give to see Beth Grant given a full role). However, Judge's ability to craft interesting characters and stories out of the mundane is always a delight.
Some day I hope he will be recognised as more than just a director of cult comedies, but for the time being I'm happy being in the minority of fans of his work.
