I think that the reviewers are unfair in their critique on this movie. This movie is not meant to be viewed from an adult perspective, but from a child's. Children are very imaginative and this film plays off of that.
The alien scene was just giving the children in the 80's what they wanted. It was kinda scary up until they find out that the aliens are friendly. I don't think this scene ruined the movie at all.
