Review of Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed (2008) by Jack M — 02 Dec 2008

You know, ever since I made the decision not to get totally riled about my beliefs, life has been great. This film has managed to rile many a movie critic, but as I read their reviews it's quite apparent they ignored the content of the movie. The final interview between Dawkins and Stein is almost all you need to see--two smart guys with (let's assume) honestly held beliefs talking things out. This is the point of the movie: we need this type of candid discussion to be allowed in academic institutions. It's just dumbfounding how people's personal beliefs drive them to silence the opposition. That is nothing new in history, but it always takes a concerted effort to overcome. And so it shall have to be again.

Several reviewers didn't like the comparison of Darwin with Hitler, but geez, a quote provided by Darwin himself from his own book informs you of his support of eugenics. I know the truth hurts sometimes, but why can't we just embrace truth? Here's a potential shocker for you: I grew up with a Christian worldview and I still lend my support to it, but when Dawkins listed his critical description of the Old Testament God, I could understand where he was coming from. When I finally read the Bible through myself, it's hard to deny that God behaves a bit strangely sometimes. But throughout the Bible itself, his most devout followers are allowed to question him (even Jesus, when he asked why he had been forsaken), so why shouldn't anyone be allowed to do so.

It's all about candid, frank dialogue, people. I know we THINK we've arrived at that point in history, but we're not there yet. Can I get an AMEN?
