Whether or not these men were "expelled" because of their interest in ID as the movie wants us to think, I do sense a lot of resistance to open discussion about the ID theory in comparison to the theory of evolution.
Both have some strengths and weaknesses. If evolutionists are so right, then why won't they debate these theories and provide evidences for their claims. Perhaps it is like the ID theory... there are no real evidences, just hypothesis which cannot be reproduced and tested.
