Exotica (1994). I saw this film by Atom Egoyan on the big screen at the Inwood theater in Dallas Texas in 1994. Wow what a movie I was impressed. I am still impressed I saw this again this week. Such an unusual film director.

his perspectives and details and stories are so unique. He started making movies in 1987 and Exotica was probably his most mature film. /the film is told in a non linear format. Sometimes this type of narrative confuses or bores me.

not with Egoyan's movie Exotica. Eric and Christina both work at the night club known as Exotica. They share a complex history that dates back many years. Francis, tax auditor by day, and Exotica patron by night, relies on the club to fill emptiness left in his life by his absent family.

Zoe the pregnant owner and operator of Exotica, runs the club as she runs her life- marshaled and emotionless. And, Thomas, the pet shop owner, is infatuated with exotic animals and exotic people. At the beginning of the film the people seem to be random strangers.

By the end you could not remove one character and the reality of this world would collapse. Egoyan combines melodrama, blackmail and an ingenious deception type paradoxes and guilt and obsession. This is a hard film to describe but wow is it worthwhile.

Exotica is a complex film, one that, upon first viewing, thrives on the multiple possibilities of its narrative arc. At the film?s end, unexpectedly perhaps, the various divergences make sense a very profound sense.

see his movie also the Hereafter its also killer. highest recommendation five stars.
