Review of Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977) by Kiu S — 26 Dec 2008
A sequel to 'The Exorcist' was always going to be tricky business and back in 1977 this much hyped attempt by John Boorman to do so was laughed off the screen and became somewhat of an embarassment for Warner Bros.
But is it really so bad? Well, it certainly isn't the classic horror movie that 'The Exorcist' is and nor does it conjure up those same sort of scares. But it is full of good ideas and winds up a likeable sort of mess.
Linda Blair takes top billing this time, reprising her role of Regan MacNeil, undergoing hypnotherapy to fully exorcise the demon from within. Blair is on top form and there is admirable support from the likes of Richard Burton and Louise Fletcher.
The movie just seems unsure of itself and forever seems to teeter between the good moments and the bad. Still, Ennio Morricone's score is outstanding and there are some exciting visuals.
