Review of Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014) by Bobby B — 30 Jan 2015
The one question running through my mind whilst I was watching this was "Who are the studios trying to target with this movie?". If it was the religious, then its secular take on the movie by trying to explain away (rather badly) the miracles would end up insulting the religious. If it was targeting the secular, why would any secular audience be enticed to watch a well known bible story?
The production values on this movie are top notch but the decidedly secular take on the bible story makes it into a very confused outing. On the one hand, it wants to look progressive in its take on miracles yet on its stereotyped approach to the Eygptians - Jews relationship is not in any way progressive. It makes the Egyptians out to be 2D evil and rather idiotic racists. The movie even tries to make them look effeminate. Even Ridley Scott could not save this movie.
