Review of Exodus (1960) by Stephen C — 21 May 2012
The Hollywood epics of the 50s and 60s really were the last word in speactacles with their huge cast of thousands and worthy plotlines .
Director Otto Preminger stakes his place as one of the best directors of this genre with this 1960 epic about the foundation of Israel in 1947.
The film is basically in two parts dealing in it first half with the struggles of the Jews on The island of Cyprus and the second half deals with the creation of the state of Israel and all the havoc that caused.
At the heart of the film is Paul Newman as Ari Ben Cannan a man with a determined drive to see the Jews prevale no matter what the cost.
Newman is pretty good as is Eva Marie Saint as his love interest Kitty Fremont ,and the supporting cast is able and game to the demands of a film of this scale.
But this really is Premingers show ,from the powerful Saul Bass opening credits to Ernest Golds rousing score ,and Dalton Trumbos literate script the film reeks of quallity even with a near four Hour running time.
I found the film powerful ,Interesting and in some parts very moving and another masterwork from the underated Preminger.
