Review of Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) by R L — 21 Jan 2012
A very interesting movie that accomplished three things for me:
1.) Made me want to make street art.
2.) Cemented in my mind that Banksy truly is an amazing artist that is in it for the love of art.
The movie also made me wonder about the validity of some forms of art, specifically pop art but then I remembered that no matter how art is created, it's still art. Sure Thierry basically ripped off the styles of other street artists and just made changes to other peoples images but in the end he had new works of art that in reality hadn't been seen before, thus making it perfectly valid, even if it's sad to see him get more credit than the people who basically made him.
But really if you're going to watch this movie, watch it for the enjoyment of getting to see the behind the scenes of a unique form of art as well as the journey of Thierry from camera man to street artist. Also a great example of marketing yourself and creating hype around your product, and probably should be used as a training/inspirational tool in business settings.
