Review of Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) by Dan B — 14 Apr 2011
Exit Through the Gift Shop is mostly interesting because the content of the street art itself is interesting. I would have been just as enamored by a documentary about Banksy and other artists without the story of Mr. Brainwash, but the film is entertaining enough as it is. The most glowing accomplishment of this film is showing how easy it is for modern pretentious asses to feign importance and become a star with little to no clue what their art means.
The bits that focus on the elusive nature of street artists is fantastic. Most of the bits about Guetta are overblown and boring. Exit is half "wow" and half "who gives a shit?" without much middle ground.
It's unfortunate that this sucked attention away from much better documentaries like Restrepo. Style over substance, I suppose.
