Review of Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) by Eduardo S — 10 Jul 2011
This prankumentary is interesting conceptually and both easy and funny to watch. It's just... not very deep beneath the surface, and a bit too glorifying for Banksy & co. The backstory of a terrible documentarian sounds 100% plausible and is kind of funny; the following conceit of the fake-artist is mostly just silly, although I suppose the art world reaction is more genuinely funny.
I have to assume that Guetta is in on the joke. As such, I suppose that Mr. Brainwash is a "performance piece", and perhaps owning an artwork from his show is actually a badge of participation in a clever Banksy piece.
.. which is entertainingly meta.
