Review of Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) by Lucia C — 29 Jul 2011
An interesting, insightful documentary, if not incredibly worthless and pointless all at the same time. The film follows Thierry Guetta, a man obsessed with cameras and filmmaking, as he soon is revealed to the world of underground street artists, who vandalize public property for their own artwork and visions.
He soon meets the best of the best; "Banksy", an artist more than a street artist, but still enjoys vandalizing public property for self-purposes. This feature is enjoyable, quirky, and surprisingly humorous, but again, has little point, or purpose.
The artwork is not insightful or intelligent, and it represents nothing. Banksy contradicts himself multiple times in this movie, leaving me in a dazed, confused state. In the end, this is a pointless, moral less, oddball experience whose only purpose is to just show us this world of street art, but not bothering to say anything consistent about it.
An interesting documentary, but not a rewarding one.
