Review of Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) by Erin D — 08 May 2012
Exit through the gift shop is a great little doc, but it is completely ironic in the sense that, while promoting that art should be free and that anyone can do it, when anyone does, they prove that people are idiots when it comes to 'art'.
The film is not about Banksy himself, rather the film became about the filmmaker turned 'street' artist who was following Banksy and other artists for a time. But as soon as he learned that he could basically make modern street art by simply combining found art and making collages of sort, he took the idea and ran with it.
He got the advertising he needed and sold millions of dollars worth of his crap to idiots who think that it actually is 'art' because of the images used from pop culture. So, after seeing this film, I'm going to have to side with Charlie Brooker when he said about Banksy : ".
..his work looks dazzlingly clever to idiots." Basically, he showed that any idiot can make fast art without meaning, and without the power of the internet, he wouldn't have gotten the recognition that he did.
