Review of Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) by Dov D — 05 Oct 2012
Exit Through The Gift Shop has become on of the most popular documentaries in recent memory, and for good reason. The unofficial leader of the graffiti world known only as Banksy takes his audience through the birth, popularization, and modernization of street art whilst pointing out correlations between graffiti and society's values and means of communicating those values.
Banksy also finds himself indirectly posing questions about the seemingly arbitrary values individuals place on things and about why people are so quick to flock in support of things labeled countercultural and rebellious.
My hangups with this film came from how easily this film could have been fabricated; but if that is the case, the film might have much more to say about today's culture. Bottom line, best widely-accesible documentary to be released in some time, albeit not the best overall.
