Review of Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010) by Dave M — 11 Feb 2013
I felt fortunate in more ways than one to see this movie. First, I live in LA which actually allowed me to see the flick and because it's one of the main settings of the movie. Second, because I moved to LA around the same time that the graffiti art movement was at its peak.
In short, I could relate to this movie. In terms of a documentary; it's informative, inventive, and funny. In terms of artistry; it's inspiring and philosophical. I'm nowhere near an expert when it comes to art, I usually just trust my instincts but Exit Through the Gift Shop really draws a line at what it means to be an artist, more specifically a graffiti artist.
I won't get into all the ins and outs of the film but it affected me in an unexpected way. Was it even real or was it all just a prank from Banksy? I don't know. All I can tell you is that if you're into art then this is REQUIRED VIEWING.
