Review of eXistenZ (1999) by Russ S — 04 Jun 2008
Two-thirds through, I had been smiling for minutes on end, enjoying clever actors tackling a clever script under a clever director. (In particular, the "game persona" parts are hilarious.) I stopped smiling at the part where the film shrugs and moons you for following it that far out, as if to say, "Well, okay, so the implications aren't really all THAT interesting.".
As well, Cronenberg demonstrates early on a great understanding of the appeal and nature of gaming; the plot's big reveal shows nearly none whatsoever, effectively convincing me that he had no idea how to end the damn thing.
Cronenberg followers will appreciate that it works as a thematic sequel to Videodrome, taking those ideas through an evolution of the medium. It won't give the film a more interesting ending, but it adds some nice perspective.
