Review of eXistenZ (1999) by Jacob R — 12 Jun 2008

Definitely falls into the "I really enjoyed this movie, but there's really no way I can recommend it to anyone" category. eXistenZ has a lot of the same themes as Cronenberg's Videodrome, and in many ways works as a companion piece to that film. However, as much of a fan as I am of that film, this is a much more satisfying viewer experience with a better pay-off.

I make the comparison to Videodrome because it's having seen that and other Cronenberg films that allowed me to like this---I think if I wasn't able to make parallels between the other movies, my brain would have tuned out as soon as I saw the videogame joystick made of flesh.
