Review of eXistenZ (1999) by Shaun G — 12 Jul 2008
I read alot of reviews saying that there were lots of incoherent scenes and bad acting but I'd like to think that it was all on purpose. After all, most of it (and MAYBE even up to the end) was part of a game. At the end, the actual game designer mentions that it wasn't his intention that the game had so much anti-gaming in it and it must have been one of the players who caused it to be there.
The jumbled up-ness could have been due to the shortcomings of the game engine trying to piece things together (since it does everything from character creation to storyline) but doesn't do it as well as it should. Even halfway through, I was a bit confused on why the girl character 'looped' when she was one of the players. It could be that the even supposed players were gamified by the game. Something like that. Pretty interesting and kept me wanting to know more.
