Review of eXistenZ (1999) by Max S — 03 Dec 2008
Easily in Cronenberg's short list of one or two weakest films. This is still a decent flick, but it suffers from a needlessly convoluted plot, contrived dialogue and term-coining, and what seems like an underwhelming FX budget.
The film never left the exposition stage. The premise is strong, and some moments are rather brilliant, but nowhere near as effective as the admittedly-silly "Matrix," which unfortunately for this film, came out the same year.
Worth seeing, but it could have been much, much better. Especially from such a visionary, distinct director.
