Review of eXistenZ (1999) by Júlio A — 29 Dec 2008
EXISTENZ (1999).
Dir. David Cronenberg.
Cast. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jude Law, Ian HolmIn the near future, a game designer is hunted by pro-realism who wants to kill her for creating an alternate version of life, destroying life of gamers alike. David Cronenberg creates a world where nothing is what it seems. It questions how far virtual reality should go, and its quite confusing at times, like the game the characters are playing in his film.eXistenZ came out pretty much around the same time as The Matrix, it has similar themes but is way more fucked up and carries Cronenberg usual grotesqueness, violence and weird sexual sensibility. It has a smaller budget too.Its hard to tell wether Croenenberg knows what he is talking about when his characters play a game, but that doesnt really matter, cause thats not really what he want to comment about, but rather how it is used to flee reality. The layered script requires strong performances, and we get them from Jennifer Jason Leigh and Jude Law. As usual Cronenberg creates a unique film, a disturbing one at times, but also a thoughtful one. Very interesting concept.
