Review of eXistenZ (1999) by Marcus M — 15 May 2009
Altogether a very David Cronenberg film, perhaps not his finest, but very good nevertheless.
The overall story is mildly compromised by a series of unsurprising plot twists, but given that the nature of the film is a question, I trust Cronenberg intentionally focused his efforts on other elements of the film rather than the expected course of the plot. For that then, this is a movie with minimalistic plot and intense visceral reaction, not unlike modern video games, though obviously more aimed at VR.
At a time when reality-bending films were coming out every other month, this one more aptly focuses on character over setting, whereas The Matrix focuses more on setting over character, roughly speaking.
