Review of eXistenZ (1999) by Mark A — 29 Aug 2011
Another gripping and visually bizarre (but still fun, and even a little campy) technology-centric sci-fi thriller from Cronenberg, this time revolving around virtual reality gaming based on biotechnology comprising amphibians' organs.
.. nothing too new in the 'different layers of reality' theme (i.e. players not knowing whether they have returned to the real world or if they are still in the game); however, the real standouts here are two of Cronenberg's genius M.
O.s: the surreal and disconcerting mood maintained throughout most of the film, coupled with creepy, original and (literally) visceral visual elements.
