Review of eXistenZ (1999) by Ben G — 24 Mar 2012
"eXistenZ" poses some very interesting questions about games. Why is it that video games all so often give players tasks without fully explaining why? An even better question is why do players comply? Many times, players just move out and start shooting things.
Even games that offer a great deal of choice are only providing the illusion of free will because the player is still limited to follow what has been programmed. So while the narrative in "eXistenz" may not make much sense at times and is not incredibly mind-blowing even when all is revealed, it's still an incredibly intriguing film to watch because it explores and challenges these facets of gameplay.
