Review of Exiled (2006) by Tim G — 16 Oct 2007
A spaghetti Western transplanted to the Eastern world of modern times... Stylish and slick direction from Johnnie To (one of the best Asian directors currently working), superb western-stylized music, solid and charismatic performances, and (of course) some of the best staged gun fights I have seen in some time (it reaches moments of poetry even).
However, the plot is rather slim, to say the least, and is nothing more than an excuse to stage those incredible action sequences. In addition, though performances are great, the characters are not as fully explored as one would like (admittedly, this is a hard task to accomplish within an action film and perhaps I am asking too much).
Despite these quibbles, the film is still an intense, visceral experience that I highly recommend! (For similar viewing, I *strongly* recommend one to see "A Bittersweet Life", one of the best recent examples of Heroic Bloodshed, surpassing even this exceptional work).
