Review of Exiled (2006) by Louise M — 06 Aug 2008
Hollywood Western meets Hong Kong action flick in modern day Macau. This film isn't so much about the action as it is about friendship. If the only Asian films you've seen are Japanese Godzilla movies then you are missing out.
This film is a mild introduction to Asian action films. For something more typical try The Big Hit (Hong Kong comes to Hollywood) and for something more classic try Hardboiled. This Johnnie To film doesn't have the fantastic shootouts of a John Woo one, but they're still as much of a ballet as his, especially the last one.
And while it starts out slow and a little confusing, one is gradually won over by the friendship of the main characters. While the film is about the bad guys, it's the good guy that gets all the respect.
The bad guys do the honorable thing in the end but still lose, but the audience is left with a warm feeling for them and their close friendship.
