Review of Excision (2012) by Catherine R — 31 Jan 2012
The cast is amazing. The highlights for me were John Waters playing a priest & Traci Lords playing a proper Christian mother. The main character, an "ugly" smartass high school girl with disturbing thoughts and no friends but her younger sister with cystic fibrosis, is a constant thorn in her mother's side.
She also grosses out ppl around her and enjoys the fuck out of it. It's all funny throughout out most of the movie; her disturbing fantasies look straight-out of Jodorowsky's brain, but they seemed pretty harmless, at least to me, since they exist only in the girl's dreams.
Then the big ending happens. I laughed so much throughout the movie up to that point that I was in full shock and disbelief. When it got down to that moment--the build-up of what was about to happen--all I could think of was, "No way.
It's not gonna happen. It won't happen. Please, don't let it happen!!!" Days after I saw the movie, I still kept thinking about it. I looked back at all the clues throughout the movie, all of the things that I initially dismissed as "harmless.
" I ended up feeling somehow responsible, that if the movie were real life, I would have let the ending happen because I wouldn't have taken the signs seriously. I mean, I've been there--as a teenager, I had pretty deranged thoughts myself, but I grew out of them eventually.
But not the chick in this movie.
