Review of Excalibur (1981) by Richard-Yves S — 23 Dec 2007
What the hell can you say about Boorman? The guy who gave us 'Deliverance' and 'Hell in the Pacific' is also responsible for 'Zardoz'.... Odd career, that. Then there's this... a blood'n'guts vision of King Artie that grabs you from the first scene and won't let you go. You learn things, too, like how to roger a woman whilst wearing a suit of armour.
BTW, there's no such thing as 'period-incorrect' when dealing with epic, especially this one. You've got pre-Roman, Roman and Mediaeval elements (incidentally originating not just in the British Isles but in continental Europe) all mish-mashed together in Malory, so why not in film? 'Troy' and 'Beowulf and Grendel' are a different matter....
