I'd forgotton how much of a whore Guenevere was. Excalibur is probably the best (and most faithful) Arthur tale out there, and It's one of John Boormans only good films. It's properly mixed with Christianity and the Old religions (and a dab of cheese).

The poster for the movie is really cool. Not the one on Facebook, thats the DVD cover which looks like a child went apeshit with photoshop. I'm talking about the real poster. I think I might even buy it.

The movies biggest strength is in it's visuals. It may seem dated now, but you can still appreciate the beauty of the art, sets and costumes. It actually looks like something out of a legend or dream. Truly magical.

The movies biggest weakness is in it's actors. I understand that they were going for something over-the-top and shakspearian, but only a few of the performers pull it off convincingly. Helen Mirren (who is smokin hot in this movie) and Nicol Williamson are the ones that come to mind. We also get to see a young Liam Neeson in a small role, Gabriel Byrne as Uther, and the always fun to watch Patrick Stewart (pre-Star Trek). This movie actually reminded me how much I hate Lancelot and Guenevere. I did enjoy the portrayal of the Lady of the Lake. It was right out of the stories.

I've always admitted to being biased to fantasy/fairy tales, but the movie is an aquired taste, so I don't think many people would love it. It kind of reminds you of what it's like to be a kid again, yet it would appeal to adults as well. If you aren't familiar with the Arthur tale then this movie would be a bit of an education for you.

I just wish they would release a special edition DVD with the full 3 hour cut, new cover, restored visuals and sound, plus lots of other goodies. It'll happen eventually.
