Review of Excalibur (1981) by Lauren B — 15 Apr 2008
Probably the best version of King Arthur put to film. I certainly can't think of anything else that surpasses this haunting, atmospheric, enthralling and occasionally disturbing piece of work. It may be slightly cheesy, yes, but it's good cheese, the kind that suits this sort of film perfectly.
Very much recommended for anyone into Arthurian legend, sword and sorcery and this sort of 1980's mythological mysticism that would go on to be perfected in the Robin of Sherwood TV series. Oh and Helen Mirren is a total babe in it, too.
