Review of Exam (2009) by Tanner J — 13 Nov 2011
A really simple concept which is original, well thought out, and credibly acted (in most cases). It probably doesn't need too much of an introduction as you can probably grasp the scenario from reading the back of the DVD i.
E. high flying people applying for a vacant post in a top company. Having said that, it still gives a good introduction of the 8 characters, as well as an insight into the rules of the exam. Only as the film develops will you then realise how much of a part these rules play to the overall understanding of the film.
Given the one setting which is used throughout the duration of this movie, it allows plenty of time to understand the personalitites and character traits of each of the applicants as well as understand the setting to which they are situated.
It was gripping from the offset as you watch the relationships develop as the 8 competitive individuals do what it takes to succeed in being successful. It's not a horror as such, but is full of intrigue and full of new twists all the way through as fresh secrets are discovered about each of them.
There is the expected final twist at the end, but at no stage is it ever obvious as to who will get the job (if anyone), nor is it ever obvious what the actual exam question is which they have to answer.
It does have one of those endings which needs some thinking about, but is a very clever conclusion to what is a thoroughly entertaining film. The only floor is that it perhaps wouldn't be as enjoyable a second time round given that the film prides itself on the character dialogue and relationships, as opposed to stunning action sequences.
