Review of Ex Machina (2015) by Erik D — 03 Feb 2016
I've been looking forward to Ex Machina for ages and now that I've seen it, I can say that it was a very enjoyable movie but I don't believe it's as good as it was hyped to be. I had no idea how the story was going to go so I everything was completely fresh for me on my first watch. At first it seemed like it was going to be a story that I've heard countless times at this point, but at the end of the movie it all made so much sense to me. The great idea that made this film so fresh and exciting is that it's actually all about the viewer. The "test" was for us, and I'm curious to hear everyone's opinions on the ending.
As for everything else, the visuals and soundtrack were excellent and the performances were equally as good. Alicia Vikander's movements were very AI up until they didn't need to be. Those who have seen the film will understand just how good she really was, and will also understand that last sentence.
Was this film "the next Frankenstein?" I don't believe it was. That's how I had this film pitched to me before I saw it and while I can see what they mean, this didn't have near the effect on me that I expected. Ex Machina was a very solid film but a few sizeable plot holes and other annoying details kept this from being a classic.
