Review of Ex Machina (2015) by Zachary M — 31 Mar 2016
Do Machines have feelings? Can they ever be equal or nay should they be treated as equals with the same morals and ethics we treat people with? When does something ever start to be truly alive? These are questions we've been asking ourselves in science fiction for years, and with the real life advances in robotics and artificial intelligence, they are also questions starting to appear in real world debates as well. The idea that something we create, that some see as nothing more than what a toaster or a lamp would be, and elevate it past that to 'true life' makes many uncomfortable and on edge.
Well, I can't say this movie truly answers them, but it does get you thinking. Aside from that the movie even delves into gender roles as well as the ever present paradigm of identity crisis.
Well shot, with powerful acting, and beautiful special effects and makeup, Ex Machina has earned a place as new sci-fi staple for years to come.
