Out of the city, deep in the country and set into a hill (instead of on top of it) is the castle of the young Doctor Frankenstein, a guy who dreams of creating life itself, and thus challenging the very idea of God. Alex Garland pays honorable homage to, as well as beautifully updating, Shelley's famous story of a genius creating life, and this life, being made by hand, is a perfect reflection of its maker. And that's the trouble.
