Review of Ex Machina (2015) by Peter F — 25 Jan 2018
Alex Garland (scribe of 28 Days Later and Sunshine) makes his directorial debut here with a sci-fi film that's fascinating and eerie. While certainly visual, Ex Machina's most controlling aspect is the dialogue which is crisp, often humorous, and heady without being pretentious.
It's an acting showcase not unlike Moon, with Oscar Isaac being particularly electric as the film's affable antagonist. Its ventures into more conventional thriller territory are less effective, but overall Ex Machina is a formidable film, and certain to garner attention when viewers realize its two leads are going to be in the new Star Wars movie.
