Evocative of many films that came before, Ex Machina streamlines a well-worn theme and adds intelligence and wonderfully sick sexual overtones. The visual styling is beautiful and the performances near-perfect.
The film looks as if it cost multiples of its actual budget. There is not one hiccup in the understated CG. Effects are flawless. The final third of the film reveals deep, feverish sickness and obsession I will not spoil here.
Distantly similar in tone to 1982's low-budget ANDROID starring Klaus Kinski, Ex Machina is a thoughtful and powerful examination of a warped application of artificial intelligence research.
